American artist Nina Chanel Abney first brought her colourful cubist style to Jordan Brand in 2022 when she reworked the Jordan 2 silhouette. In 2024, she returned to the iconic signature line, reimagining the Jordan 3 in another fusion of contemporary art and sneaker culture. Her distinctive approach produced an expressive version of the popular model, which was released alongside an apparel collection covered in bold colours based on those of New York’s road signs. Eye-catching graphics honouring aspects of Michael Jordan’s career adorn each item, including Abney’s own distinctive version of the Jumpman logo, which matches the blocky, angular characters that appear in much of her artwork. Both the sneaker and the clothing were showcased by American singer-songwriter Alicia Keys and her record producer husband Swizz Beatz in a powerful marketing campaign designed to celebrate the greatness in everyone. New York City’s Museum of Modern Art also supported the launch by holding a Pop-Up in its Soho Design Store dedicated specifically to the stylish collection.
Bold tones and unique details distinguish this captivating Jordan 3 Retro x Nina Chanel Abney shoe as a powerful collaboration between the sneaker brand and the American contemporary artist. Waxed canvas sits alongside fuzzy suede on the upper, each material exhibiting its own vibrant shade of green: one Bicoastal, the other Malachite. The sole unit, meanwhile, is decorated in a smooth off-white tone of Fossil, with striking flashes of orange and yellow highlighting sections of the grippy outsole. More Fossil accents show up across the design, producing a pleasant tonal complement to the colourful outer on the rope-style laces and the large heel tab. Distinctive Nike Air branding rises out of this last feature in a soft, bright green material, and a small orange tag emerges from the overlay below it. The insole is coated in an orange and white chequered pattern with a dark green circle at the heel. This disc-shaped emblem contains a black Jumpman that is more angular than the traditional one as it is Abney’s take on the iconic Jordan Brand symbol. Another of her personal Jumpman logos has been woven into the tongue in Fossil-coloured thread, thus completing this compelling artistic reimagining of the classic Jordan 3.
