Free Metcon 5
Nike’s Free Metcon training shoes combine the flexible, barefoot feel of the brand’s Free technology with the strength and stability of its Metcon series. This provides a more versatile option than either series does on its own, which is evident in the design of 2023’s Free Metcon 5.
The foundation of the Nike Free Metcon 5 is a dynamic sole unit of soft foam encased in a firmer compound which evenly distributes the weight of the athlete and rises up towards the rear so that it cradles the heel. As a result, it brings flexibility through the front half of the foot and stability at the back, with durable comfort throughout. These attributes are supported by the design of the outsole, whose grippy rubber surface features flex grooves below the forefoot and a more solid plate in the heel, thus delivering great traction during weightlifting exercises as well as more dynamic movements.
The upper of the Free Metcon 5 complements the well-rounded design of the sole unit with a breathable, lightweight build and a sock-like inner sleeve that holds the foot in place. The webbed eyelets enhance this lockdown effect, as does the extra padding around the collar. This also serves to improve comfort, while the sturdy heel clip below it adds yet more support to the heel. Overall, the changes to the upper make this edition far easier to get on and off than its direct predecessor while also comfortably holding the foot in place during athletic movements.
The Nike Free Metcon 5 has been optimised for gym-goers, with a versatile build that performs well through a range of different workouts, from HIIT to moderate weightlifting and even short cardio sessions. Its use of Nike Free technology in the sole makes it really comfortable, and it can even be worn as a casual sneaker, especially with the stylish aesthetic forged by its exaggerated heel and subtle branding. In short, the Free Metcon 5 is the ideal training shoe.
