When Nike released its first Vaporfly design in 2017, it changed the game for runners everywhere, precipitating a switch from thin-soled racing shoes to those with a deeper, more responsive sole unit. In 2021, after extensive testing on all types of runners, including the marathon-master Eliud Kipchoge, the Vaporfly series reached its third iteration with the release of the Nike Vaporfly 2.

Just like its predecessors, the Vaporfly 2 is built upon a thick midsole made from Nike’s lightweight, energy-returning ZoomX foam. This springy underfoot cushioning is enhanced by the presence of a full-length carbon fibre plate that runs through its centre, its spoon-like shape facilitating a responsive step and a seamless transition through the foot for a more economical running stride. Beneath this, the outsole is made from durable rubber with flowing grooves cut into it to provide excellent all-round traction.

The upper represents the most significant update on the Vaporfly 2. Made from a lightweight engineered mesh that comfortably hugs the contours of the foot, it is much more flexible and breathable than previous versions, keeping the runner cool over long distances. A thin synthetic overlay wrapping around the toe brings added structure and lockdown, which is bolstered at the opposite end of the shoe by a band of cushioning inside the heel. The thin tongue features just enough padding to protect the top of the foot from lace pressure, the minimal lacing system keeps the weight down and the laces themselves have notched edges so that they do not come loose during movement.

The speedy build of the Vaporfly 2 is matched by its dynamic aesthetic. Its flowing sole unit is large and bold, while its distinctive upper is adorned with an exaggerated swoosh that extends along the lateral flank and over the toe. Alongside the offset lacing, this creates an eccentric look, and the array of bright colourways offers a choice of distinctive styles.
